Potassium (K) levels in the hair reflect adrenal function and electrolyte balance more efficiently than they represent dietary intake. K is an electrolyte and an activator of enzyme functions in the cells. K can be low in the body for these reasons:
- gastrointestinal dysfunction
- renal stress
- adrenal stress
- chronic diarrhea
- diuretic use
- emotional stress
- high levels of Ca and Mg
Symptoms of K deficiency:
- muscle weakness
- fatigue
- tachycardia
- diabetic acidosis
- abnormal electrocardiogram
K may be elevated when metabolic disorders are present and exposure to toxic elements have occurred. Commonly, low levels of Ca and Mg elevate K levels.
