Potassium (K)

Potassium (K) levels in the hair reflect adrenal function and electrolyte balance more efficiently than they represent dietary intake. K is an electrolyte and an activator of enzyme functions in the cells. K can be low in the body for these reasons:

  1. gastrointestinal dysfunction
  2. renal stress
  3. adrenal stress
  4. chronic diarrhea
  5. diuretic use
  6. emotional stress
  7. high levels of Ca and Mg

Symptoms of K deficiency:

  1. muscle weakness
  2. fatigue
  3. tachycardia
  4. diabetic acidosis
  5. abnormal electrocardiogram

K may be elevated when metabolic disorders are present and exposure to toxic elements have occurred.  Commonly, low levels of Ca and Mg elevate K levels.
